The Traffic issue
As you are aware this is a long standing issue for you and your committee. The traffic problem in our area involves the 'rat run' from the Artane Roundabout through to the Howth Road.
The following presents a timetable of the events to date: First contact with Dublin City Council (DCC) in respect of problem Meeting with DCC officials to discuss traffic intensity on Abbeyfield main road Residents requested at the Residents' Assoc. AGM to canvas the residents in order that the Residents' Association would petition DCC to act on this problem.
Residents' Assoc. committee go door-to-door to request residents to sign the petition.
November 2007 Residents' Assoc. committee obtain signed petitions from two-thirds of residents in Petitions with supporting letter submitted to Ms. Celine Reilly of Dublin City Council on 25th February 2008 by Pete Cummins at the North Central Area offices.
DCC traffic officials monitor traffic levels on main Abbeyfield road September 2008 Initial feedback from DCC on Traffic Petition: • Over 700 cars per hour use the 'rat run' during peak times • The peak hour is 8:00 to 9:00 am (Monday –Friday) We await the recommendation from the officials to the Traffic Advisory Group.
Proposed Traffic Camera on the Howth Road
As you may be aware, Dublin City Council propose to install a traffic camera at the junction of the
Howth Road and Castle Avenue. This has been covered recently in certain media such as The Northside
People and the Evening Herald.
A number of concerned residents approached your Residents Committee and looked to the local Public
Representatives for support in this matter.
These concerned residents gathered over 100 signatures from houses which would be potentially affected
from a privacy and security perspective and presented same to our public reps.
Your Residents Association committee met with the local Public Representatives in early September to
present our concerns; and subsequently met with the traffic officials in Dublin City Traffic Centre to
discuss the issue. As the current proposed location is surrounded on all sides by single storey dwellings,
we have asked that they consider an alternative site on the traffic island opposite the Beachcomber.
They are currently reviewing this as an alternative.
Anonymous Newsletters
A number of Residents have received anonymous 'Information Newsletters' by post.
The content and tone of this correspondence is libellous, defamatory and upsetting
for the recipients. As is usual with anonymous letters, the lies contained are an
attempt to cause confusion and promote distrust among our community. The only
way for residents to obtain clear and accurate information is to refer to a trusted
source – one where you know who
you are talking to – your committee. Our names
are on the back of this newsletter.

Lets look at some of the comments in this 'Mis-Information Newsletter'.
●The only planning permission granted to the owners of the Legion Hall was for a 1.8 metre ornamental railing around the property (which includes approx 50% of the green) and 6 car parking spaces in March 2004. The new owners have been in discussion with the planners for some time trying to get positive feedback for their plans to include apartments over some leisure complex. The feedback from the planners has been negative due to the zoning of the area as Z 9. Amenity & Leisure. The latest request is for a commercial crèche (with four overhead apartments) Two years ago your committee tried to have the Legion Hall/Karate Club listed as a heritage building to prevent this type of development but we were unsuccessful. We continue to monitor and will keep you informed on this issue. We expect to see a Planning application here soon and will need the support of all our community if we are to stop the destruction of one of the only two greens within our area.
●As is common practice with developers looking to build or develop, the Dublin City Council Planning Department provides a facility known as pre planning or “Pre Application Consultations” to meet and discuss possible development with planners. The planners will guide as to what may, or may not, be acceptable in a particular location (this is available to all residents / developers in the Dublin City Council region). The owners of the Legion Hall / Karate club have employed the services of private town planning consultants and have met with the planners. This is their right as it is yours. ●No Planning Application has been received by Dublin City Council for any further development at the Legion Hall at this time. However the owners of this property have demonstrated that they are very keen to develop it. So we wait on their application and we can assure you that we will be looking for a high level of support to try and protect this green.
●Jimmy Magee is a well respected and long serving member of our community. He joined the committee at our request and retired from it at the end of last year. He is an honest decent man who still stands up for what he believes in. Unlike those who hide behind poison words. ●There is NO multi-storey development planned for Haddon Park. We have spoken with the planning department and they have confirmed that they have NEVER even received an approach on this issue. More lies! ●The 'Unauthorised Development' in Haddon Park is actually three narrow poles which were erected to support nets, to prevent footballs entering the adjoining back gardens. Following a local complaint, an enforcement order was issued to remove these poles as they exceeded the height that would not require planning permission.
●With regard to rights-of-way that you may (or may not) have, you should contact your solicitor to pursue. Your “Solicitor” should have been aware of this when you purchased your property – you paid them enough for the conveyancing! ●On any maps we have been able to locate there are No Legal Public Rights of Way that have been obstructed. If you have any other maps we would be delighted to see them. Just take a walk through the Nuns Walk and into Haddon Park and you will quickly realise who thinks that they have a right of way.
So why is this individual (or individuals) intent on causing disharmony?
Bitterness? Greed? Having a Bad Year? We can only presume!
Access to the rear of some properties is potentially worth a LOT of money. But this
access can only be gained through someone else’s private property! That of the
sports club, and there are “some” who would prefer to have it shut down because
turning it into another “Venetian Hall” will potentially line their pockets.
By printing lies and creating confusion they attempt to generate distrust among our
community. Just like the bully in the school yard name-calling, they hope to intimidate all
members of our community to keep silent. On your behalf we will stand up to this bully.
Your Residents' Association will continue to provide accurate and unbiased
information for all residents.
Unfortunately, as it is unsigned, we can only bring this to the attention of the Gardaí.
However it is also under review for “Postal Fraud” which is punishable by fines and
imprisonment.
So if you happen to know who this “Poison Pen” person is we would be delighted to
return as much of their sick propaganda through their own letterbox.

The names and addresses of all your committee are printed at the end of this
Newsletter. We have nothing to hide.
AGM Update
Your Residents' Association AGM was held in the Killester Parish Resource Centre on 12th April.
A good attendance received reports from the outgoing Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer.
The meeting was informed of developments in planning, traffic and neighbourhood watch issues; all of which
are brought up-to-date in this newsletter.
The meeting thanked Pete Cummins, Barbara McCann and Jimmy Magee for their contribution to the
Residents' Association in the previous year.
Neighbourhood Watch
The committee Neighbourhood Watch scheme representatives met with the local Community Liaison Garda –
Sean Dixon in June. A small number of burglaries (3) occurred in the area in the first 5 months of the year.
Residents are advised to ensure that their windows and doors are locked when they leave their homes. Also it is
important that we look out for our neighbours when they are away. If you see any activity that causes you
concern you should report this – do NOT be afraid to call the emergency services – ring 999.
Annual Membership Subscription
It's that time of the year again when we ask you to support our endeavours to look after, and care for the
area that we live in. It is easy to leave it to others but you benefit if you live here. A little support goes a
long way. Your subscription helps us to help our area.
The annual subscription is 20 Euro per household and 10 Euro per retired household. We would appreciate if you could drop in your subscription in the envelope provided to your nearest committee member. If not, a member of the committee will call to collect (please ask for ID if you are uncertain). A receipt will be supplied on request.
It's your Association for your Area - your support matters. Presently we have over 50% membership. We
encourage those who have not yet joined to do so now. We need your support and we are there to support
you.

Each year the committee needs up to 9 members to carry out it's work. New committee members are always welcome. If you feel you can attend a meeting once a month for an hour or so then you should put your name forward - we would like to hear from you.
