The climate of Britain is more or less the same as that of the northwestern part
of the European mainland. The popular belief that it rains all the time in Britain is
simply not true. The image of a wet, foggy land was created two thousand years
ago by the invading Romans and has been Ⓐperpetuated in modern times by
Hollywood. In fact, London gets no more rain in a year than most other major
European cities, and less than some.
The amount of rain that falls on a town in Britain depends on where it is.
Generally speaking, the further west you go, the more rain you get. The mild
winters mean that snow is a regular feature of the higher areas only. Occasionally,
a whole winter goes by in lower-lying parts without any snow at all. The

winters are in general a bit colder in the east of the country than they are in the
west, while in summer, the south is slightly warmer and sunnier than the north.
Why has Britain’s climate got such a bad reputation? Perhaps it is for the
same reason that British people always seem to be talking about the weather. This
is the changeability. It may not rain very much altogether, but you can never be
sure of a dry day; there can be cool (even cold) days in July and some quite warm
The lack of extremes is the reason why, on the few occasions when it gets
genuinely hot or freezing cold, the country seems to be totally ( Ⓑ ) for it. A
bit of snow and a few days of frost and the trains stop working and the roads are
blocked; if the thermometer goes above 80°F(27°C), people behave as if they were
in the Sahara and the temperature makes front page headlines. These things happen
so rarely that it is not worth organizing life to be ready for them.

Viagra, the new pill that conquers impotence? Could there be a product more tailored
to the easy-solution-loving, sexually insecure American psyche than this one? The drug,
manufactured by Pfizer, went on sale three weeks ago, finally giving talkshow hosts
something other than Bill Clinton and Pamela Lee to ( Ⓐ ) smarmy jokes about.
Spurred, perhaps, by just that sort of publicity, would-be patients have been Ⓑbesieging
urologists' offices and sex clinics ― men both genuinely dysfunctional and merely
dissatisfied, skulking around in hopes of achieving "better" erections through chemistry.
Already, a kind of Viagra connoisseurship is beginning to take hold. "The hundreds are
absolutely incredible," says a very satisfied user, referring to the drug's 100-mg
maximum-strength dosage, "and the effect lasts through the following morning." What
else can one say but Vrooom! Cheap gas, strong economy, erection pills ― what a country!
"We've always been waiting for the magic bullet," says Dr. Fernando Borges of the
Florida Impotency Center in St. Petersburg, where he has been working with sexually
dysfunctional patients for 21 years. "This," he says, "is pretty close to the magic bullet."
The very day Viagra became available, Dr. John Stripling, an Atlanta urologist, churned
out 300 prescriptions with the help of a rubber stamp he had had the foresight to purchase.
At the Urology Health Center in New Port Richey, Fla., which participated in the drug's
clinical trials, the waiting time to see a doctor for a Viagra consultation is a month. Not
that this has stopped motivated patients. "We've been inundated with emergencies," says
Dr. Ramon Perez. "Pain in the kidney. Blood in the urine. But when they get in here,
they just want to ask us about Viagra. It's amazing. These people have been impotent
for three years, and they cannot wait another few days."

At the same time that men were developing their version of seduction, others
began to adapt the art for social purposes. As Europe's feudal system of
government faded into the past, courtiers needed to get their way in court without
the use of force. They learned the power to be gained by seducing their superiors
and competitors through psychological games, soft words, a little coquetry. As
culture became democratized, actors, dandies, and artists came to use the tactics of
seduction as a way to charm and win over their audience and social milieu. In the
nineteenth century another great change occurred: Ⓐpoliticians like Napoleon
consciously saw themselves as seducers, on a grand scale. These men depended on
the art of seductive oratory, but they also mastered what had once been feminine
strategies: staging vast spectacles, using theatrical devices, creating a charged
physical presence. All this, they learned, was the essence of charisma-and remains
so today. By seducing the masses they could accumulate immense power without
Today we have reached the ultimate point in the evolution of seduction. Now
more than ever, force or brutality of any kind is discouraged. All areas of social
life require the ability to persuade people in a way that does not offend or impose
itself. Forms of seduction can be found everywhere, blending male and female
strategies. Advertisements Ⓑinsinuate, the soft sell dominates. If we are to change
people's opinions-and affecting opinion is basic to seduction-we must act in subtle,
subliminal ways. Today no political campaign can work without seduction. Since the
era of John F. Kennedy, political figures are required to have a degree of charisma,
a fascinating presence, or they will lose their audience's attention, which is half the
battle. The film world and media create a galaxy of seductive stars and images. We
are ( Ⓒ ) in the seductive. But even if much has changed in degree and
scope, the essence of seduction is constant: never be forceful or direct; instead,
use pleasure as bait, playing on people's emotions, stirring desire and confusion,

The attention of others matter to us because we are afflicted by a congenital uncertainty
as to our own value, as a result of which affliction we tend to allow others' appraisals
to play a determining role in how we see ourselves. Our sense of identity is held
captive by the judgements of those we live among. If they are amused by our jokes,
we grow confident in our power to amuse. If they praise us, we develop an impression
of high merit. And if they avoid our gaze when we enter a room or look impatient after
we have revealed our occupation, we may fall into feelings of self-doubt and

strengths and decided upon our value, another's suggestion that we were Ⓐinconsequential
would not wound us. We would know our worth. Instead, we each appear to hold within
ourselves a range of divergent views as to our native qualities. We discern evidence
of both cleverness and stupidity, humor and dullness, importance and superfluity. And
amid such uncertainty, we typically turn to the wider world to settle the question of our
significance. Neglect highlights our latent negative self-assessments, while a smile
